PROJECT OVERVIEW

A coordinated retrofit designed to improve insulation, generate renewable electricity, and modernise heating

This project involved a comprehensive residential retrofit delivered by AEG at a property in Codnor Ripley, Derbyshire. The installation combined a 100mm external wall insulation system, a roof-mounted solar photovoltaic array, and Dimplex electric storage heaters to create a more efficient and comfortable home.

By integrating thermal insulation, renewable electricity generation, and controlled electric heating, the project addressed multiple performance issues at once. The result is a property with significantly lower heat loss, better use of energy, and a much stronger EPC outcome.

THE CHALLENGE

Addressing poor insulation, inefficient electric heating, and weak overall energy performance

Before the upgrade, the property experienced significant heat loss through poorly insulated external walls, creating higher heating demand during colder periods and reducing indoor comfort. The building also relied on an inefficient electric heating setup that did not support good energy performance.

These issues affected both running costs and livability. The project required an integrated solution that could improve the building fabric, support lower energy consumption, and deliver more reliable and controlled heating throughout the home.

Before Upgrade

Poor thermal insulation, high heat loss, inefficient electric heating, and a low EPC rating.

Project Objective

Create a coordinated retrofit that improves efficiency, comfort, and long-term property performance.

THE SOLUTION

A multi-technology installation combining insulation, solar generation, and efficient electric heating

01

External Wall Insulation

A 100mm EWI PRO insulation system was installed across exposed walls to improve the thermal envelope and reduce ongoing heat loss from the building fabric.

02

Solar PV Integration

A roof-mounted solar photovoltaic system was installed to generate renewable electricity onsite and support lower dependence on grid-supplied energy.

03

Electric Storage Heating

Dimplex electric storage heaters were installed to improve heat delivery, support off-peak energy use, and provide more practical room comfort throughout the property.

EXTERNAL WALL INSULATION SYSTEM

Strengthening the building fabric with a 100mm insulated external envelope

The external wall insulation installation was central to the retrofit strategy. By applying a 100mm EWI PRO system to the outside of the building, AEG improved the property’s ability to retain heat and reduced thermal loss across exposed wall areas.

The process included wall preparation, insulation board fixing, detailing around openings, and a rendered finish to enhance both thermal performance and external appearance.

SOLAR PV INSTALLATION

Renewable electricity generation integrated into the wider property upgrade

The solar PV installation allows the property to generate renewable electricity onsite, helping support the operation of the electric heating system while reducing reliance on imported grid energy.

Delivered using technology from Chint New Energy Technology Co., Ltd., the system forms an important part of the overall upgrade by improving energy resilience and contributing to lower ongoing electricity demand from conventional sources.

ENERGY PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT

A major uplift in EPC performance from a low-rated property to a modern efficient standard

G

Pre-Installation Rating

The property had a low pre-installation energy rating of G (11), reflecting poor insulation and inefficient heating performance.

B

Post-Installation Rating

Following the full upgrade, the property achieved a much stronger rating of B (86), showing substantial improvement in overall performance.

Integrated Impact

The combined effect of insulation, solar PV, and electric storage heating delivered a dramatic uplift in energy efficiency and usability.

PROJECT IMPACT

Lower heat loss, improved comfort, reduced energy demand, and stronger long-term performance

The completed works transformed the property into a more comfortable and energy-efficient home. The external wall insulation reduced heat loss, the solar PV system introduced renewable generation, and the electric storage heaters provided a more practical and controlled internal heating solution.

Together, these measures created a more resilient and modern residential property better aligned with present-day efficiency expectations and lower long-term running costs.
