- Room in Roof Insulation
Installing room in roof insulation involves insulation boarding being fitted in between the rafters underneath the existing plasterboard walls.Room in roof insulation works by trapping heat within your home to create a blanket effect. This allows you to more easily maintain a warm home without using as much energy to do so, saving you money on your energy bills.
What are the benefits of room in roof insulation?
- It keeps converted lofts warm and cosy, making them more comfortable.
- Prevents heat escaping through your roof to help maintain throughout your home.
- Reduces your energy bills as you need to spend less as your home will stay warm for longer.
- Increases the value and desirability of your home.
If you have a loft that is not used as a living space then loft insulation may be a better option for you.
A room in roof is typically (but not always) a bungalow which has had a loft conversion that is accessed from a fixed staircase, but it can also be an original building feature. Normally a room in roof will have sloping ceilings, and dormer or sloping style windows at the upper floor.
A room in roof can have multiple different heat loss elements including sloped ceilings, stud walls, dormer and gable walls and a flat ceiling; and by all of these elements properly a thermal barrier is created that prevents heat from being lost. It is important that each element of this home insulation is appropriately considered and incorporated into the system design to prevent thermal bridging and maximise the energy efficiency gains.
Most of the heat lost in a property is lost through the roof, therefore room in roof insulation is essential to save energy and reduce bills. Adequate room in roof insulation can ensure that you are spending less money on energy and keep you cosy in your living space.
When a roof space (such as the loft) is converted into a room, it requires a different type of insulation that will fit into the gaps between the joists and behind the new walls of the room.
Without this insulation, the room in roof will be highly susceptible to temperature changes in both summer and winter as seen in the image to the right. In addition, the rest of the house will suffer from heat loss in the winter if there is no insulation, increasing your energy bills.
With room in roof insulation, the heat is held in in the winter and held out in the summer, meaning your room in roof will hold a much more stable temperature and will be usable all year round
Most people can benefit from room in roof insulation and, with grants and funding from Energy Companies and the Local Council, it can be a very cheap way to lower your energy bills
New government funding is available for those meeting the criteria, meaning it could cost you nothing.
